Light in the World Ministries March 2013

March 2013 – LITWM Update

Photos at bottom of update.

Thankfully, the elections here in Kenya are finished, and there has not been a repeat of the violence experienced in the 2008 elections.  We are all doing well, and have had a great month of ministry.

March started with me travelling to Nigeria to conduct a school in the area of Ikorudu outside of Lagos.  The more I go to Nigeria the more I understand and appreciate the people.  Worldwide, the country has a reputation of being corrupt, and it is very corrupt.  But then, so is a lot of Africa. I think the best place I have traveled to is Rwanda.

Nigeria, Ikorudo – We had 16 students gather for the training. (I was informed there would be over 50.  No matter how much a man positively confesses something, does not mean it will happen :).)
In one of the pictures at end of the update, you will see the name of the hall called “Battle Axe”.  This has come from the popular teaching of spiritual warfare stating “we are going to destroy and pull down the enemy’s strongholds.”  This thought then leads to hour- long sessions of “binding and loosing,” which has absolutely no focus on Christ.  During the school God had his own battle axe to wield; to cut to the root of the tree; to turn our hearts from selfishness to Him.  One of the attending students stated, “No longer will I preach a gospel with its appeal to man’s selfishness, but will proclaim the truth to awaken men to their need of God.”  This kind of understanding can only be given by God through a revelation of His Word.

Burundi, Mwaro – It has been over 2 years since we ran a school in Burundi.  The previous schools we had run were in Bujumbura which is the capital.  This time we took the school to the village called Mwaro.  There were 34 students in attendance and we had a wonderful graduation.  I was amazed that over 300 people came from the surrounding areas to be present for the graduation.

Uganda, Iganga – This is the last school that we are running in this area of Uganda.  I heard some great testimonies from the students in this school.  During the graduation former students gathered from the surrounding areas and were very supportive to see the school continue on.  We have plans in May to move the school from Iganga to a place called Mubende.  Thankfully people have offered the use of their buildings, which means we will provide the food and electricity while the school is running.

Upcoming schools the month of April we have schools running in Kinshasa, DRC; Goma, DRC and Ivory Coast.  The school in Ivory Coast is new territory.

All of the schools listed in this update are financially supported by “Light in the World Ministries”

Light in the World Ministries Jan-Feb 2013

Thank you all for you prayers, encouragement and support. We have had a great start to the new year. Listed below are the countries where we have run the School of Christ in January and into February.

South Sudan, City of Yei. 8th-20th January – This is the third school that we have run in this country and the second time it has been done in the city of Yei. We had 28 students that graduated and all were hungry for the Word of God. During the school we allow an opportunity for questions to be asked. This is usually done by the students writing the questions down and then when the opportune time comes, we answer it. Many of the questions reveal the dire need for biblical training and helped me understand why God has allowed us to come with the School to meet this need.

Tanzania, town of Nyaishozi in Kagera province, January 14th – February 1st. There were 40 students in attendance for this program and about 20 of these were pastors. This remote town required a long commute from Rwanda across the border and through one of the Tanzanian national forest areas. We had held a fasting prayer conference in this town last year, and it is great to see results of that time reflected in this school. We started another school here on the 10th February.

Uganda town of Iganga, Eastern province. We held our second school in Iganga 2nd -30th January with about 23 graduates. The testimonies out of this school were a blessing. You could clearly hear that the students understood the Word of God as they communicated the truths they had learned.

Nigeria, city of Ibadan January 20th – February 10th – It was wonderful to see these students hungry for God. As many of you know, Nigeria is the largest populated country in Africa and represents a large spectrum of religious ideas. Apostasy, corruption, and an “if it works must be right” attitude, have left their mark on Christianity in Nigeria. The belief in the Bible being the final authority on doctrine and practice of life, has been undermined by the popular trend of “prophets” and people with their “visions and dreams.” This has led to completely erroneous ideas being held to. There is a great need for the School in Nigeria and we thank God for the opportunity to reach these with the truth of the Word of God.

South Africa, Pretoria – The local church has been running the school in the evenings. I visited at their request, to be present for the graduation of the school in Pretoria. So thankful to the faithful brothers who are laboring to see the message of the School go forward in this country.

In February, we are presently running a school in Tanzania in the same town of Nyaishozi. In March we have schools planned in Nigeria, Uganda and Burundi. In the coming months of 2013 we have openings into Ivory Coast, Gabon and there is a school planned in May for the town of Malakal (which borders North Sudan) in South Sudan.

Lastly, we ask you to remember Kenya in prayer as the Presidential elections approach in a couple of weeks. As many of you may remember, the last election in 2008 sparked widespread violence throughout Kenya. We are taking precautions to be as safe as possible ourselves.  However, we do ask that you remember this very volatile time in prayer.

Light in the World Ministries Dec 2012

Matt 24:6 “And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled…”

We are seeing this very clearly in Africa right now. In the eastern part of Congo is a city called Goma that during the month of November was taken over by an armed rebel group called M23. This region has seen repeated conflicts over the years and is very unstable. In the past the School of Christ has been run in the cities of Bukavu, Goma and Uvira in the Eastern part Democratic Republic of Congo. We had planned running a school in a city called Butembo in November, but one week prior to the running the school everything had to be put on hold because of the takeover of M23. This unfortunately meant we are not able to run the school there as planned, but we continue to look for it to open up for the future. We will be meeting with pastors and SOC graduates from eastern DRC in Uganda next week to discuss how we can continue the work in that region under these hostile conditions.

Nebbi 2012-11

Uganda, Nebbi

This is the first time that we have run a school in Nebbi, which is located in the Northern part of Uganda. We had 26 students come through the school that lasted 3 weeks.

Kirehe, Rwanda

Rwanda, Kirehe district

Because of a resounding interest from the last school we ran in this district, we agreed to run another school in this area. We had many Pentecostal pastors who had not been able to attend the previous school, come through this one that we ran in November. There were 34 graduates of this School.

South Africa, Pretoria

I was contacted a few months ago by a previous graduate who went through the first school I ran in Pretoria in South Africa. He told me he had been running the school in the church and asked if I could come and visit the graduation. I was not able to attend the first graduation but I went for the second. It was a great blessing to see so many young people who had come through the school, who were fired up for Jesus, praying and studying the Word of God. I am planning on traveling back at the end of January for a joint graduation of two schools from December and January.

Upcoming in December

In December we had plans to run a school in Tanzania, unfortunately, violence has erupted in that area as well. We have postponed the school until January.

I am leaving this week to meet with former students in Burundi. I will then go to the border of Congo to meet with pastors who are former school of Christ students, as mentioned previously. God willing, on the 16th I will travel to Nigeria and Togo to meet with former students and encourage the forward movement of the school in these countries.

At the end of the month we will be running a school in Kinshasa (capital of Congo) and are expecting about 50 students.

Colossians 4:3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance to speak the mystery of Christ…God Bless,

The Cartwrights.

Light in the World Ministries October 2012

SOC training in Kisangani, DRC.
“Jambo”
It’s been a busy October here in Africa, which has included some interesting travel experiences.
Country: Congo – Democratic Republic of Congo this is the largest land mass country in Africa. Although it is rich in natural minerals, oil, gold etc, very little of the money has reached the general populace. On the eastern side of this country there have been wars and fighting, which has included brutal and tremendous disregard for human life. There is no direct highway that connects east from west, instead travel has to be done via plane.
The School of Christ training was run in the city of Kisangani which is located in the North central part of Congo. Their were 110 registered students of which 69 graduated. Attendance and discipline issues kept the others from graduating with a certificate, although some stayed on and finished the School. They were so blessed by the teaching, they did not want to leave.
Country: Rwanda – Rwanda is a country in East Africa that experienced a horrific genocide in the 1990’s. We continue to run Schools here as the word has spread over the years about the effectiveness of the teaching. We ran a school this month with 30 students. All of them were either Pastors or Bishops, which here in Africa means they are responsible for more than one church. The testimonies from some of these leaders is encouraging. They have been through Bible schools, but this is more than they have experienced before. Praise God for the opportunity to meet the need in this land!
Country: Nigeria – We had a bit of a set back in this country this month, as there were two schools scheduled having 25 students each. However, when I arrived to start the schools only six people kept their word and turned up for the training. I amalgamated the two schools into one and we ran it in the city of Lagos. Although the turn-out was not as good as we had planned, we thank the Lord for the six who graduated and look forward to further work in Nigeria.
The family is keeping well. We have had a visit from Hilary’s mum, Frances this month. It has been great to have her over. Homeschooling is still progressing and the children are all growing quickly. Their days are filled with school, animals, tree forts, rope swings and each other. We really appreciate all of you who pray for our safety. We have seen God’s hand in so many ways lately, keeping us from great danger, it is such a comfort to know you are praying for us.
By the grace of God, we are trying to take advantage of every opportunity the Lord places before us here in Africa. Thank you for praying, giving, and encouraging us in the work of LITWM here. We are so thankful and blessed to be part of it together with you.
